Hanoi Honored as Top Global Tourist Destination in 2023

The City Tourism Department announced that Hanoi has been honored as a top global tourist destination for 2023 at the recent World Travel Awards ceremony held in Dubai, UAE.

The World Travel Awards (WTA) is a premier global accolade in the tourism industry held annually since 1993 to honor outstanding achievements in various sectors of the tourism industry. Often referred to as the “Oscars of the global tourism industry,” the World Travel Awards cover a wide range of categories, including aviation, railways, destinations, golf tourism, hotels, and resorts.

Securing this prestigious title for the second time, the capital of Vietnam surpassed other prominent contenders such as Sydney, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong (China), and Lisbon.

The award for the ‘Top Global Tourist Destination City of 2023’ once again affirms the potential and allure of Hanoi’s tourism. Hanoi takes pride in its rich tourism resources, including 5,922 historical and cultural sites and 1,793 intangible cultural heritage items such as the Thang Long Imperial Citadel, Temple of Literature, Old Quarter – Hoan Kiem Lake area, Hai Ba Trung Temple, Soc Temple, Thay Temple, and Tay Phuong Pagoda.

It is also home to the largest number of craft villages in the country, boasting 1,350 craft villages, among which famous ones include Bat Trang pottery village, Van Phuc silk village, Ha Thai lacquerware village, and Quat Dong embroidery village.

Furthermore, the local tourism infrastructure is undergoing comprehensive, high-quality, and professional improvements. The department mentioned that the city has embraced information technology to advance tourism, including providing free Wi-Fi at tourist attractions. This year, Hanoi boasts 48 restaurants out of the 103 Vietnamese restaurants recognized by the Michelin Guide, with three of them receiving one Michelin star. In October, the capital surpassed Kuala Lumpur, Taipei (China), and Kyoto to be recognized as the best emerging culinary city in Asia at this year’s ‘World’s Best Restaurants Awards.’

According to the Tourism Department, the latest award for the ‘Top Global Tourist Destination City’ is another testament to the local tourism industry’s efforts, achievements, and Hanoi’s strong position on the global tourism map.
