Health and psychology experts warn that neglecting oneself can be more harmful than what most people realize.
One common misconception is that self-care can be expensive. In reality, it can be quite the opposite. Dr. Alisha Reed, a medical doctor and women’s health expert from Xavier University in Louisiana, offers some suggestions.
It’s Not Just Exercise
While self-care primarily focuses on the body, it’s not limited to just exercise. Reed points out that it also involves skincare, getting enough sleep, and, if economically feasible, transforming your bathroom into a spa-like space for relaxation and body care. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet is crucial for nurturing the body.
Reed emphasizes that there are many cost-free ways to practice self-care. You can explore your own city, enjoy a sidewalk café, and do so without spending too much. Prioritizing yourself means you’re already taking good care of yourself.
Don’t Reserve Self-Care for Sundays Only
Self-care is an everyday practice. Reed advises asking yourself: What does self-care mean, and how can we practice it every day?
“I think what’s really important is incorporating self-care into your lifestyle. You don’t have to wait until Sunday to relax and unwind,” the expert says.
Taking care of your mental well-being through self-care can stimulate your brain and enhance your productivity. Engage in activities like reading, solving puzzles, visiting art exhibitions, attending plays – all things that captivate and stimulate the mind. This helps expand your knowledge and develop your intellect.
Laugh and Cry When Necessary
Expressing emotions is essential for your overall well-being. Reed suggests creating a gratitude list to help you tap into your emotions. Keep a journal to record your thoughts and feelings.
Enjoy Relationships That Nurture You
Self-care is closely connected to positive relationships and friendships. Reed advises participating in social activities, meeting friends, occasionally partying, or simply spending time with family, friends, and colleagues to savor joyful moments. Traveling is also a good way to socially care for yourself.
Harmonize with Your Soul
Mental self-care means aligning with your soul and spirit. Truly connect with your inner self. Practices related to spiritual self-care include yoga and meditation. Such practices allow you to nurture your soul and nourish your spirit. “Many people practice these methods of self-care to help manage anxiety, depression, or insomnia,” says Reed.
Live an Organized Life
Practical self-care involves making your life easier and less stressful. When you’re capable of self-care, you’ll think about organizing, planning your days and weeks effectively.
Reed also points out that hiring someone to help with cleaning or cooking is a tangible form of self-care.
