This is an extremely important holiday for Vietnamese women at home and abroad, a day for us to recognize the great contributions of women in both the smallest and biggest things.
Origin and History of October 20th
October 20th is an important day of celebration for Vietnamese women. This day has a particularly important meaning, marking the birth of the first women’s organization in Vietnam.
The origin of October 20th stems from the founding of the Vietnamese Anti-Imperialist Women’s Association (now the Vietnamese Women’s Union) on October 20, 1930. This is the day that for the first time in history, Vietnamese women were gathered into a socio-political organization, with a common goal and ideal of fighting for national liberation, class liberation, and women’s liberation.

In the context of the country being invaded by the French colonialists, and the revolutionary movement of our people was on the rise, the Communist Party of Vietnam tried to gather forces, including women. On February 3rd, 1930, the Indochina Communist Party was born, identifying women as an important force of the revolution, needing to be liberated along with the nation.
To meet practical requirements, on October 20th, 1930, the Vietnamese Anti-Imperial Women’s Association was established in Hanoi, with Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Khai as President. The birth of the Association marked an important turning point in the history of Vietnamese women’s struggle, contributing to the cause of national liberation, class liberation, and women’s liberation.
Since then, October 20th has been solemnly celebrated by the Party and State of Vietnam every year. This is an opportunity to honor the great contributions of Vietnamese women in the cause of building and protecting the country.
